There is no payment method that makes an unverified supplier safe. The safest structure combines the right payee, the right timing, written order terms, and a payment method that fits the order.

Before discussing fees, confirm that the legal supplier, contract party, invoice issuer, and bank beneficiary match. Treat any last-minute request to pay a different company, personal account, or unrelated country as a reason to stop and re-verify.

For a sample or first small order

A platform-protected order, PayPal Goods and Services, or card payment may provide a clearer dispute route than a direct wire, depending on the product, country, account, and current eligibility rules. Do not assume every commercial or custom-made purchase is covered. Read the current terms before relying on buyer protection.

On Alibaba.com, the platform states that Trade Assurance protection is based on the terms written in the online order and applies when payment is made through Alibaba.com's payment platform. Put the exact material, model, quantity, quality standard, packaging, and ship date in that order. A promise left only in a separate chat is harder to enforce.

For a normal production order

Bank transfer is common in B2B trade. It can be appropriate after the supplier and beneficiary have been verified and the payment is split into milestones. The important question is not whether T/T is normal. It is how much money remains under your control if production is late or the goods fail inspection.

Ask your bank to confirm beneficiary details carefully. Verify any change through a known contact using a second channel. Never accept a changed bank account only because an email looks familiar.

For a larger order

A documentary letter of credit can reduce some payment and counterparty risks when correctly structured, but it costs more and requires professional handling. It is document-driven. The International Chamber of Commerce is explicit that banks deal with documents, not the goods themselves. A compliant document set is not proof that the products inside the container match your sample.

If you use an L/C, make the required documents meaningful and obtainable. Consider how inspection evidence, shipment documents, quantity, and timing will be represented. Work with a trade-finance professional; a poorly written credit can create cost without solving the actual product risk.

A practical payment sequence

  • Verify the legal company, factory role, and payment beneficiary.
  • Write the product specification and acceptance standard before paying.
  • Pay the smallest commercially workable deposit.
  • Link later payments to real milestones, not calendar promises.
  • Inspect completed goods before final payment and shipment.
  • Keep payment records, order documents, inspection evidence, and supplier confirmations together.

Safe payment is a process: verify who receives the money, control when it is released, and define what must be true before each payment becomes due.

What not to do

Do not send 100% in advance to obtain a small discount. Do not pay a personal account for a company order without a verified legal reason. Do not move an Alibaba order off-platform and still assume Trade Assurance applies. And do not confuse a successful payment with a successful order.

Check current terms before payment. See Alibaba.com's Trade Assurance guidance, PayPal's eligibility guidance, and the ICC explanation of documentary credits.
